Writings on the Wall #5: A Tribute to the Dead

Having just written a post about Olga Tokarczuk’s book, Flights, I thought I must share my thoughts on travel as a way of visiting the past and paying a tribute to the great souls who made their cities and countries great.

It isn’t only about visiting crypts in cathedrals or cemeteries, many a time it means a visit to a great author or musician’s erstwhile home and paying respect to their art and their life of great achievements.

The inspiration and joy I have derived from visiting the homes of Shakespeare, Victor Hugo, Kafka, Mozart and others are too many to be extolled here. Suffice it to say, I always come away with a bit of their stardust in my eyes and a recollection of their works in my heart. That is reward enough.
